1. 题:What, in your own, opinion, is the best method of desalination?
答:There are at present 2 different ways of desalinating water - namely by thermal distillation and by reverse osmosis (RO). The method by RO is less energy intensive but depends very much on the fine membranes used to extract the salt. Energy prices, water temperature and salt content are major determinants of a plant design. The trend is now towards RO, rather than thermal distillation.
2. 题:Are there any negative on desalinating the water? Please describe the full procedure.
答:The process of desalinating water is to remove all salts and impurities either through many stages of boiling/distilling the water or passing the water through fine membranes. The desalinated water then undergoes post-treatment to replace essential minerals. The water is well within WHO Drinking Water Guidelines.
3. 题:Do you support water desalination or do you think buying water is a better way. Please explain your answer.
答:Cost and availability of water are major considerations. In Singapore, water is a scarce resource and as demand continues to grow, we have to look for new sources of water, one of which is desalinated water.
4. 题:How effective is water desalination on giving out clean water? Are there still and unnecessary minerals in the water?
答:Desalination is very effective in removing salts and the water produced is clean.
5. 题:How does your company you work in conserve water?
答:PUB has many on-going programs to encourage the public to use water wisely. The latest is the 10-litre challenge wherein every one of us is urged to use less water in our daily life and try to reduce our current domestic usage of 160 litres per person per day by 10 litres.
We also have an Efficient Home Program in which households are encouraged to install water saving devices.
6. 题:Do you think that conserving water is still necessary since we can obtain water by desalinating?
答:Desalinating water is expensive and all of us must continue to conserve water in all ways possible.
7. 题 :Do you think we should stop buying water from other countries and depend on our own desalinating plants if water prices increase? Please explain why.
答:We have adopted the 4 National Taps [Water from Johor, Local catchments, Desalinated water, and NEWater] approach, i.e. diversification, to have a robust and cost effective system.
8. 题:How can Singapore’s desalination projects be improved? Can normal people make a difference? Or is the government the only one to be involved?
答:We can all make a difference by being aware that water is a precious resource. We must all learn to adopt water conservation measures and make every drop count. When we conserve, we lessen the demand on water and hence obviate the need for new supply sources to be developed.
